Hurricane Idalia Update and Trash Schedule Reminder
Not much has changed since our last post regarding Hurricane Idalia. According to Mike Maze, Meteorologist at WRAL, “The rain from Idalia is moving in and initially it won't be too heavy but that will change overnight as it will increase in intensity. Some of the rain will be heavy at times with flash flooding a good bet in many locations in our southern counties where up to 3-5" of rain is possible. Winds initially this evening won't be too strong, but they will increase overnight as well with gusts ranging from 30-45 mph. We could see spotty power outages overnight, so make sure your devices are charged up.”
Wilson County Schools have been closed for Thursday, August 31. For more closing and delay information, please check those resources provided to you by your school system, employers, etc. In most cases, it appears operational changes have been kept to a minimum.
A Plus Disposal has not changed their scheduled pick-up for this week, so they will be coming tomorrow (Thursday) as normally scheduled. Our policy states bins should be put roadside by 8pm on Wednesday night and pick up will occur sometime Thursday.
Town Hall is expected to be open on Thursday, August 31 during our normal hours of operation should you need us for any reason. Please stay safe!
Hurricane Idalia and Trash Schedule
We are currently watching the updates regarding Hurricane Idalia and will continue to monitor its path and any news that needs to be shared with our residents and business owners. At this time, while the Governor has issued a Declaration of Emergency for North Carolina (to assist with clean up after the storm), there have been no operational changes in our area as we expect minimal impacts. We will update any necessary information or alerts to our website for easier access.
We have confirmed with A Plus Disposal there is no current change in the trash schedule for this week. Therefore, please continue to put your trash, recycle and yard waste bins alongside the road by 8pm tonight (Wednesday) for pick up on Thursday.
Thank you!

Fire Hydrant Testing: July 6 and 11
The Sims Volunteer Fire Department will be completing the flow testing of the hydrants in our area on Thursday, July 6 and Tuesday, July 11, during daytime hours. The overhead water storage tank will be filled to accommodate for the extra water usage.
Hydrant flow testing and flushing is an important preventative maintenance activity that:
verifies proper operation of the hydrant
evaluates the available flow and pressure to the hydrant
allows utilities to deliver the highest quality water possible to their customers
removes mineral and sediment build up from the water mains
Prior to local hydrants being tested, you may want to obtain water (in pitchers prior to flushing) for your everyday use including drinking, cooking, etc. and avoid using water during these times.
When the testing is taking place, water quality may temporarily be reduced. Using water for tasks such as dishwashing, laundry, or showering may result in the discoloration of your clothes or household items, and should be avoided. Plan ahead and be sure your laundry and dishes are done before the testing process begins! Despite the discoloration, your water is safe to drink.
Once the hydrants in your area have been tested and flushed, it won’t be long until your water is ready for normal use again. In most cases, water should run clear with just a few minutes of faucet flow. Turn your faucets on cold and let the water run for 5 minutes or so. If you are still seeing discolored water or sediments in the water, continue running cold water on all your faucets and flush your toilets until it is clear.
If you have any questions, please call us at 252-237-4226. Thank you and we appreciate your cooperation!
Please exercise extra caution when driving in the area this Thursday and next Tuesday to help keep our firefighters safe!

Potholes and Other Work
Great News! The Contractor responsible for repairing the potholes in town (including on Sassafras) and other repair work has informed us they will be here this week, on Thursday, May 18. We have asked them to start with the potholes on Sassafras.
We apologize for the delay. We have been frustrated, as I know you all have been, with the time it has taken getting these repairs scheduled and completed. Behind the scenes, we have had several contracts to complete this work, but the contracts were not completed, or (with the current contractor) the work was scheduled and had to be canceled due to weather or other factors. Since COVID, we have had a very difficult time, as have many other small towns in NC, getting contractors to fulfill work orders due to a backlog of work and a lack of workers. We have sought out multiple contractors for the work needed in town and have not been able to get companies to respond at all or we enter into a contact with them to not have them completed. Again, this has been an issue for the last several years all over the state, but it makes it no less frustrating.
We look forward to having this work completed and having these potholes repaired THIS WEEK! Thank you!

Public Comment Requested for our Regional Transit Plan
We are currently seeking public comment from our Sims residents and business owners regarding our Area Regional Transit Plan to assist with planning for our public transportation needs as we grow. Please read the following information from Mr. Robert Hiett, Executive Director of the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments (UCPCOG).
Transit is one of the critical economic and workforce strategy items we're working on in the region, and this study is now at the point of taking some public comment. Transit in our region is important to support our developing workforce, and to help them maintain their employment once they get hired.
Greater Rocky Mount, Greenville, & Wilson Area Regional Transit Plan
North Carolina has experienced significant population growth in the last decade and this growth is impacting where, how, and why people travel around the state. The goal of the Greater Rocky Mount, Greenville, & Wilson Area Regional Transit Plan (RTP) is to plan for public transportation needs in a consistent and coordinated manner for the diverse population included in the ten counties of the Greater Rocky Mount, Greenville, & Wilson Area Coordinated Region.
Link to survey: Regional Transit Plan | Greater Rocky Mount, Greenville, & Wilson Area Online Survey (surveymonkey.com)
The Greater Rocky Mount, Greenville, & Wilson Area Coordinated Region covers ten counties:
Beaufort
Bertie
Edgecombe
Halifax
Herford
Martin
Nash
Northampton
Pitt
Wilson
The Regional Transit Plan will analyze population and demographic data, travel trends, current transit services, as well as prior policies and plans to complete a regional assessment.
To augment the data analysis, public and stakeholder engagement activities will include stakeholder interviews, discussion groups, public meetings, and a virtual room housing various project details. A Coordinating Committee, with representatives from each county, will oversee the project’s engagement process.
Once the needs of the community are understood, a set of potential transportation solutions will be developed. The prospective solutions will be evaluated and prioritized into a five-year plan. A financial plan will also be developed.
Please take a few moments to complete the survey to ensure our opinions and needs are heard and taken into consideration prior to the adoption of the Greater Rocky Mount, Greenville and Wilson Area Regional Transit Plan. The survey will remain open until July 25, 2023.
Thank you!
